The Hero’s Journey
You have probably heard of Joseph Campbell’s idea of the Hero’s Journey. If you haven’t, you have been touched by it. The Hero’s Journey is present in every hero movie and on every stage. It’s the arch of our lives and it is present both for us as humans, as homeopaths, as students, and as patients.
At the Prometheus Homeopathic Institute, we teach our students the steps on the Hero’s Journey. All students begin with the Call to Adventure — someone or somewhere they were introduced to the idea of attending homeopathy school. When one sets out, it’s exciting! New books, new friends and new ideas.
Our homeopathic patients experience a similar journey. When they begin, they are introduced to the holistic totality of homeopathy and all that it can open for them. They eager, willing, and ready to heal.
As is the case in any adventure, next comes the Refusal of the Call. This sometimes even comes a month or more into school. We may find ourselves saying things like, I can’t do this. I’m too old for this. How can I possibly learn all of these remedies! This is impossible! And so on. This feeling is normal and it happens to everyone. Even Luke Skywalker.
Again, this can happen to our patients as well — This remedy isn’t working. My symptoms aren’t that bad. I can handle it. Things aren’t as bad as I thought. Our job is to hold space for their place on their journey, understanding that we have also been there and felt that way.
The next steps in the journey are the appearance of Supernatural Aid, Crossing the Threshold, the Belly of the Whale and so on. Using this metaphor not only helps students to understand where they are on their journey, and that they are in good company, it also helps us get a sense of where our patients are on theirs.
We are now enrolling for both Simpli-PHI, for beginning students, starting January 2023 and
Intensi-PHI, for homeopathic graduates, starting March 2023.
